The first software that I installed on my new iMac was Adobe Lightroom and to say that it has dramatically improved my photo management and editing workflow would be an understatement. I expected it to be set as the default program to open when I connect the camera, once installed - or ask me to do the same. But it didn't. Everytime I connect my camera (Canon 6D) it opens iPhoto. I wanted of course, Lightroom to open, not iPhoto.
I did some research and came across this article and got my problem solved.

Here is the brief:
1. Connect your device for which you want to set the import default (Camera in this case) to your Mac (iMac or whatever model) and make sure it is switched on.
2. Open "Image Capture" application from Finder | Applications
3. You should see your connected camera listed on the left hand side of Image Capture window.
4. From the drop down list on the left hand side panel which is labeled "Connecting this camera opens", choose "Adobe Photoshop Lightroom".
That's it. You should be all set. From now on, Lightroom will open when you connect your camera.
